Normal for Now

About The Director: Afsheen Misaghi

Proudly hailing from West Virginia, Afsheen Misaghi is a child of South Asian and Middle Eastern Immigrants where he grew up on both country music and Bollywood hits. Growing up, Afsheen turned to the arts—particularly theater directing and acting—as a way to express and navigate his intersectional identities. His ability and desire to further express his alterity led Afsheen to West Virginia University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in acting. During his time there, he created the theatre organization WVUP All Night Live where he directed and produced sold out shows that focused on diversity and inclusion. During this time he met his collaborator, Nick Tabidze; they wrote, acted in, and directed multiple award winning short films together, including A Short Film which was shown at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Afterwards, Afsheen attended the University of Florida, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in acting. During his time there, he directed and acted in numerous productions, including national commercials and professional regional theatre performances. Afsheen was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship, in which he was assigned to teach and conduct research at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University in Ankara, Turkey. Much of Afsheen’s work and research has been dedicated to the representation of race in the Media. During his master’s program, he began conducting research on the intersections of race and entertainment, in which he spear-headed an initiative to collect and present data on the University of Florida’s long standing issues with racism and diversity in arts education. During his Fulbright Scholarship, he gathered research on how representation of race in American media affects perceptions of America and its diverse population. Afsheen's goal is to produce, direct, and star in works that represent people of color and those from marginalized parts of American society.

Afsheen is incredibly excited for the world to see Normal for Now and is equally as excited for the world to see the Appalachia he knows and loves authentically represented on screen. See more about him at
